UNICEF Sponsored Swimathon

This Friday, Blue Class set out for a very special swimming session: our sponsored swimathon in aid of UNICEF.

We chose as a class to support UNICEF after learning about the plight of children around the world who are taken into a life of forced labour. The class were passionate about this issue and wanted to help take a stand against it.

We began by writing to our MP, Dr Dan Poulter, who supported our campaign with a letter to the Home Office about child trafficking in the UK. We recently received a response from the Home Office, which will soon be added to our campaign page on the school website.

The second stage was to plan our sponsored swim to support the work that UNICEF do around the world to help end child labour. We set ourselves the ambitious goal of swimming a total of 13 miles (a half-marathon) as a class. Our swim session was just 40 minutes long and we needed to complete a total of 1040 lengths as a class - an average of 40 lengths per person. I am pleased to report that we achieved our goal, swimming 1078 lengths altogether - that's 13.475 miles!

A big thank you to everyone who has sponsored us. If you didn't get asked for sponsorship and would like to support our cause, please make a donation to UNICEF on our behalf and let us know so we can add your donation to our total. (jamesmansell@earlsoham.suffolk.sch.uk)

We will be collecting in money over the next couple of weeks and will announce the total raised on the blog when it is all collected in.

Fundraising Champion

On 11th April, one of the pupils in Yellow Class undertook an incredible journey with her mother to reach the top of the highest mountain in Wales, Mount Snowdon. Despite difficult conditions, with winds of up to 40mph and a temperature of -13 degrees at the summit, both succeeded in their task, raising a fabulous £1000 for the charity Walking with the Wounded.

We are so proud of her achievements here in school and wanted to highlight her efforts here.

Congratulations on completing such an amazing task!

Pop-Up Café

This week the school council's hard work led to their first fundraising event: the Pop-Up Café. Following kind donations of cakes and biscuits from parents, and some diligent baking from pupils during the day, the doors were opened to paying customers, who were invited to take a seat and be served by the year six pupils and members of the PTFA. Drink orders were taken and plates given out. Customers were then asked to make their selection from the mouthwatering mountain of confection in the centre of the hall. It was hard to know what to choose, there being so many delicious-looking options.

The hall was heaving with people, and seats were soon full. A happy buzz spread through the assembled patrons, and money flowed almost as quickly as the tea and pink milk!

After some careful counting it can be revealed that the children raised a magnificent £220. UNICEF and Cancer Research are to be given 10% each of the money raised, with the remainder going towards the painting of the train - one of the chairperson's manifesto pledges. Who says politicians don't keep their promises!

A huge well done to the school council for all their hard work, and a big thank you to the PTFA for supporting them in the organisation and serving of drinks.

Children in Need

This morning, in aid of Children in Need, pupils and staff dressed up in weird and wacky clothes for a donation. They also laid a copper trail around the school. The day was organised by one of our year six girls, and all the year six pupils became teachers for the morning, dividing between the three classes to cook biscuits with Red Class, make and test paper planes in Yellow Class, and develop games and animations using Scratch in Blue class. It was an interesting, and enjoyable, experience being a pupil for the morning in my own class and I think the year six children learnt a lot about the need for good organisation and an ability to think on your feet!

The children were collecting up and counting the coins during the afternoon, so we will hopefully be able to announce how much was raised in tomorrow morning's assembly.

Remembrance Day

On Tuesday, at 11am staff and pupils gathered on the playground for a two minute silence to remember the soldiers and their families. Three girls read out a touching poem that they had written, before the church bells began to strike.

Over lunchtime, the two eldest pupils laid memorial crosses on the village war memorial.

Children in Need

Today, to raise money for Children in Need, pupils and staff were invited to come to school in their pyjamas and/or wacky hats and spotty clothes. We saw a wonderful array of interesting outfits, including one-derful onesies, weird wigs and glamorous glasses.

The children laid a copper trail around the school, and the school council collected donations. Thank you for all your donations. We will announce the grand total of moneys raised as soon as we have finished counting it all, so check back soon.

Red Nose Day

Today saw the children (and staff) celebrate the 25th anniversary of Red Nose Day in style. There were a variety of interesting costumes on show which included Mr Mansell wearing a tie for the first time in school history, inside out clothes, back to front clothes, wacky hair, coloured hair (which gave Mr Pearce a headache), lots of red and some 'undergarments' on show!
At break time Mr Mansell judged the Blue Class 'Bake off' but was undecided after tasting all entries three times. Many children decorated cakes for a donation whilst individuals also raised money through their own sponsored efforts.
It all added a nice splash of colour and some wonderful smiles on a rather gloomy day. Hopefully the money raised will go to spread those smiles further afield.

Children in Need

The total raised from last week's fund raising activities for Children in Need now stands at £142.38. This is a tremendous achievement and is by far the largest amount that we have ever raised.
So, thank you to the children for their costumes and coppers, parents for your great cakes, School Council for your ideas and organisation and anyone else who made a contribution in terms of time, money or effort.

Earl Soham Remembers

This morning,at 11am, the whole school gathered on the top playground to participate in an act of remembrance.

The dull and overcast conditions didn't dampen the spirit of the whole school who had been developing their understanding of what, how and why, we remember during the week.
An impeccable two minutes silence was observed by all.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Following this, six Year 6 children paid their respects and laid remembrance crosses at the village memorial.
Remember them

Eleventh hour

Meaning of war?

Everybody who died

Memories of the past

Bloody battles

Realise their sacrifice

Armies across the world

November eleventh

Courage that they had

Effort they shared

Died in hope

Awful time

Years have passed

Sponsored Swim

This afternoon Blue Class took part in WWF's Blue Mile sponsored swim. The pool was divided into five lanes and the children worked in teams in a relay, taking it in turns to complete a length, before handing over to the next swimmer. The aim was to collectively swim a minimum of a mile in 30 minutes.

Everyone worked really hard and we finished the half-hour session, clocking up a total of 464 lengths in all, which is the equivalent of 5.8 miles!

Well done to everyone who took part and a big thank you to everyone who sponsored us. We will update this post, when all the money has been collected, with our grand total.

Ipswich Midnight Walk Saturday 14th May

10.45 pm - Portman Road - under the stand keeping out of the rain, we attempted the warm up which was being conducted 'Bollywood' style, but Jennie was the only one tall enough to see over the crowds what was going on!

11.pm - off we go - following the long crocodile of flashing bunny ears and fairy wings!
2.am. Here we are back at Portman Road - very weary but happy to have completed the 8 miles in 3 hours, all in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice. Our sponsor form will be open for a few more days if anyone would like to contribute to this most worthy cause.

Red Nose Day 2011

On Friday, we supported Red Nose Day by dressing up and 'Doing Something Funny for Money'.

In Blue Class, roles were reversed as the pupils became the teachers for the morning.

Everyone had a great time and lots of money was raised. First signs suggest that it was more than £200, which means that Mr Mansell and Mr Pearce will both be having their legs waxed on Monday. Ouch!

Here are some pictures taken over the day.

Bring and Buy Sale

Earlier this afternoon, the School Council organised 'Bring and Buy' sale was held. The School Council decided that they would like to support the 'Treehouse' Appeal which is aiming to raise £3million to build a new children's hospice in Ipswich.
The children's efforts saw a tremendous total of approximately £160 raised when added to the recent income from the 'Come as you Please' day.
A very big, and grateful, well done to all of you involved.

Children in Need

Children arrived today in an array of spotty outfits, with pockets laden with coins for a coin trail around the school, in aid of Children in Need.

Children in blue class spent their maths lesson engaged in a very practical activity - counting and sorting the money! Once we had weeded out the handful of foreign coins and those with George V on, we had a very respectable total in excess of £80.00 to donate to Children in Need.

A big thank you to everyone!

Sport Relief 2010

This morning staff and children alike dressed up in their sporting gear and took part in a range of sporting activities in aid of Sport Relief 2010.

Following assembly, the children began a dance-a-thon, with an hour of non-stop dancing in relay style.
Everyone got in to the spirit and boogied along to great hits such as "Show Me the Way to Amarillo" and "Reach for the Stars".

At break time, various sporting activities took place, from games of football...

...to basketball...

...and more!

The morning was finished off (along with the staff) with a game of rounders, staff v. Y6.
After a gruelling two innings and some very creative accounting, the Y6s won the game 49-39.

But of course, who won or lost is not really important. The important thing is that our efforts helped raise some money for a very worthy cause. Check back here again soon to find out how much we raised.

Rotary Club Assembly - Shelter Boxes

This morning Rotarians Chris Sharp, Arthur Dorsett and Susan Hansen led our assembly on the theme of Shelter Boxes.

They spoke about the current plight of people in Haiti following on from the recent devastating earthquake.

The children got to see the contents of a Shelter Box which can provide everything that a family of ten people would need to survive should disaster strike. A Shelter Box costs £490 and can save lives and make a real difference. The School Council are going to discuss which fundraising events we could hold to put money towards buying one. Some of the equipment was passed around - here are some children feeling the warmth of one of the blankets. It was an extremely interesting and eye-opening assembly which left the children thinking that they could make a real difference to the lives of many.

Haiti Earthquake Appeal - Cake Sale

After school today, after a weekend of mixing and folding, the school held a cake sale in aid of the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

A great deal of effort had clearly been put in by children and adults alike.

Having totalled all the money from the 'Come as you Please' day, other donations and the cake sale we have raised a magnificent £270 for the appeal. Well done and a very big thank you to everyone for their efforts and generosity.

Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Following on from yesterday's assembly about the recent disaster in Haiti, the children decided on a few things they would like to do to help support the relief efforts. Today they decided on a 'Come as you Please' day wearing blue and red - the colours of the Haitian flag. This raised an incredible amount - £150. It was great to see the children and the school community coming together to support this.

A large group of children have also got together to organise and publicise a cake and drink stall for after school on Monday 25th January. They compiled a letter to send to parents and have done an incredible job in everything they've done. I look forward to Monday with great anticipation, your efforts and caring attitude will undoubtedly make it another success.

Blue Peter Appeal - Operation Smile

Members of the School Council have done a fantastic job in advertising and promoting our efforts to support the 'Operation Smile' appeal being co-ordinated by Blue Peter. They held an assembly and wrote a letter to all parents explaining their plans.

The afternoon of Monday 23rd November saw all three classes mix up and work together, many children with their brothers and sisters.

They produced a fantastic 67 operating gowns which children in india, undergoing operations for cleft lip and palette, can wear saving £3 per operation.
