Basketball Tournament Gold

On Thursday afternoon we took two teams to Debenham High School to take part in the Suffolk School Sports Basketball Tournament. We faced three teams from Occold Primary and one from Stonham Aspal. Both our teams aquitted themselves marvellously, with the B team taking the Bronze position and our A team taking home Gold medals to add to their collection.

It was a great afternoon and a pleasure to be able to watch them compete. Well done, all of you!

Enjoy the photos!

Small Schools' Swimming Gala Champions

This morning two teams of swimmers journeyed to Diss Swimming Pool for the annual Small Schools' Swimming Gala. Carrying on their recent run of success, the children came back with the silverware as a result of a superb range of individual and team performances.
What was also great to see is how bright the future looks with a number of children from Years 4 & 5 competing so well.
Many thanks to everyone involved for your efforts and support - it really does make a difference.

Anti-Bullying Week

We feel that it is important to keep the children informed on what bullying is, and how to deal with it so that it doesn't become an issue at our school. So, anti-bullying week was an opportunity to remind the children of ways to deal with difficult situations and dilemmas.
During the week, we looked at a number of dilemmas relating to bullying, both in assembly and PSHE lessons. Yellow and Blue classes watched the film 'Ant Bully' and then produced storyboards for the key events.
Blue Class took part in a poster competition, the winning entrants shown below.

Sportshall Athletics

Earlier this evening, Earl Soham finished a highly credible 5th place in the Sportshall Athletics Tournament at Thomas Mill High School. Lining up against many school that were considerably larger in size, Earl Soham children did themselves proud with their refreshing attitude towards the competition. There were smiles all round as the children made the most of the opportunity. I am also delighted to announce that Earl Soham came 1st in the 'noisiest' supporters category! Parents, your support and encouragement was 'top notch'!
Many thanks to Mr Bosley for providing the photos below, mine were rather 'blurred'.

Small Schools' Netball Tournament

With some degree of trepidation, the Earl Soham Netball team arrived at Stradbroke for their first competition of the year, and for some of them their first match ever.

They needn’t have worried as they got off to a flying start, beating Dennington 2-0, followed by more success against Wetheringsett and Helmingham, 4 -0 and 4-1 respectively.

The crunch came in the final game of the round robin, versus Easton, as both teams hadn’t yet lost a match. The final score in this very exciting, crucial game finished in a 3-3 draw. Thus both teams finished the round robin on equal points but Easton just pipped Earl Soham for the trophy on goal difference.

All the players are to be congratulated on their performances, and it was a huge achievement to only concede 4 goals in 4 matches. Well done everyone – not forgetting coach Jennie and the loyal band of parental supporters.

Small Schools' Football Tournament

Two Earl Soham teams travelled to Stradbroke for the annual small schools' football tournament. It was a great achievement to be able to enter two teams for the first time ever and all involved should be rightly pleased with their efforts. One team managed to finish 6th (Played 7, Won 1, Drew 2, Lost 4) whilst the other tam finished 3rd (Won 4, Drew 1, Lost 2). Hopefully, this effort and commitment will continue on to next week's 7-a-side fixture at Melton

More Cross Country Success

On Wednesday 20th July, three children represented the school in the area cross-country finals at Mellis. Having qualified in the top 25 previously at Stonham Aspal, the children knew that this was going to be a real challenge.
However, the tremendous efforts saw our two girls both finish in the top ten and our male representative striding home to finish first. This is a quite remarkable achievement as it means that Earl Soham have now provided either the boy or girl champion for the last three years!
All three children should be so very proud of their efforts - whop is going to step up to the plate next year?

Year 3 Tchoukball Competition, July 4th

The children went to Debenham Leisure Centre on Monday afternoon to take part in a Tchoukball competition - a game they had been learning with Miss Sandal from the high school in the previous 3 weeks.
One of our teams was very successful, coming 2nd , the other played well but finished lower down the score sheet. The group photo looks like they had an enjoyable time.

Quadkids @ Hartismere High School

This afternoon, four boys and four girls from Years 5 and 6 took part in the Quadkids Competition at Hartismere High School. All of the children took part in a 600m run, 75m sprint, standing long jump and vortex throw. Once all the scores were added together, Earl Soham finished a commendable 7th place (out of 10 teams).
All eight children are to be congratulated for their efforts, as are the children from all of the other schools that took part.Good luck to All Saints Primary School, Laxfield and Bungay Middle School (who finished in the top two places) when they represent the area in the county finals on Thursday.

Gymnastics Competition - Suffolk Finals

Earlier today, two teams from Earl Soham took part in the Suffolk Finals' of the Small School Gymnastics Competition. The setting for this was the fantastic Piper's Vale Gymnastics Club in Ipswich.
We were delighted that our Year 2 team (pictured below) finished a very creditable 10th place and should be very proud of the way that they overcame their nerves and performed so well.
However, this was then eclipsed by our Year 3 & 4 team who ended up on the podium with a wonderful 3rd place.

Both teams should be delighted with their efforts as so much hard work had been put into preparing for the event. Thanks also to all of the parents and staff who supported us throughout and enabled us to ultimately take part. The final 'thank you' must go to Ms Piper and Mrs Barker who put in so much 'extra' time to get the children to this position - we know they are over the moon!

Small Schools' Rugby Tournament

Earl Soham travelled to Hartismere High School to take part in the annual 'Touch' Rugby Tournament. In weather more suitable for cricket, 9 small schools battled it out during a rather hot and humid morning. It took Earl Soham a while to get into the swing of playing this rather complex sport but, improving every time they took to the field, they ended up a very creditable 5th place. Yet again it was nice to see sport being played competitively yet respectfully and with smiles on faces.

Swimming Gala Success

On Wednesday morning, ten children from Years 4, 5 & 6 represented the school in the annual swimming gala held at Framlingham College.
In a simply fantastic performance by everyone, Earl Soham finished 3rd overall, but 1st in the small schools' category. On returning to school, the smiles of delight were there for all to be seen. Well done to everyone, and thanks again for the tremendous parental support at poolside.

Wake & Shake Competition

This afternoon, two groups of children took part in the High Suffolk School Sport Partnership's Wake & Shake competition. The children had choreographed their own routines ready for the challenge ahead.

Wake & Shake is one of the initiatives developed by the Sport Partnership as an effective way of getting all pupils active at any time, any place and any where - as long as there's a DVD player!

The one of the groups from Earl Soham performed to 'They Don't Really Care About Us' by Michael Jackson with the other group performing to the 'Question of Sport' theme.

With over twenty groups on show, both groups from Earl Soham (from Years 4 to 6) performed with style, grace and a bit of oomph!

Well done to all for giving it their best and congratulations to the older girls who were judged to have finished in 3rd place.

Sports Hall Athletics Final - Tuesday 18th January

Congratulations to all the children who took part in the athletics competition this afternoon. Despite a depleted team due to illness everyone rallied round and tried their hardest against very stiff competition from the other qualifying schools. Yes, there were two Middle Schools represented, but they were only allowed to enter Year 5 and 6 children (what do they feed the children on in Bungay and Halesworth to make them so tall?!) .
The photos here (sorry I didn't catch everyone - you were too quick!) I hope give a flavour of the activities and the enthusiasm with which we competed. We were the smallest school represented - and I couldn't have asked any more of them, especially the subs that stepped in at the last minute this morning.
Congratulations also to Laxfield Primary - the eventual winners.

Sunflower Competition

The summer is almost over and with that the entries for the sunflower competition are in. Having apparently sown the wrong seeds, Mr Pearce's tallest effort (see below) came in at a rather embarrassing 31cm. However, it is rather pretty!
There were some fantastic entries this year, with the tallest reaching a quite incredible 3m 18cm (only 2m 87cm taller than Mr Pearce's) and being superbly presented in a glorious way.
Below are some of our entrants who collected a range of prizes for their efforts.

Summer Writing Competition

This morning in assembly, all entrants in the summer writing competition received their prizes. the top three received something little bit extra. The overall winner produced a fantastic piece of writing about his canoeing adventure during the holiday.

Well done to all who entered, remember; you've got to be in it to win it!

Mid/South Suffolk Cross Country Championships

Earlier today, two of our year 6 girls travelled to the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook to compete in the next round of the Cross Country Championships.

Faced with the daunting task of nearly 200 other competitors, many of whom were a year older, they lined up in the beautiful surroundings.

Undaunted, the girls ran their hearts out and finished a fantastic 16th and 21st, battling against the elements and illness. This means they qualify for the next round, where I'm sure they'll do themselves proud again.

Well done - a fantastic achievement!

On a Brighter Note!

How are your sunflowers growing?
Better than mine? - PROBABLY

I took these photos this morning (can you see the bee?) and I won't use any camera tricks to make mine appear bigger than what they actually are!
My tallest sunflower now stands at a 'magnificent' 95cm. I don't think that it will be the tallest - but it is beautiful!

Remember to take photos of yours, measuring them accurately, and compile the information for when you get back to school in September - you may win a prize...
Good luck!
