Black History Month

During the past few weeks, assemblies have focused on celebrating Black History Month. We have looked at the stories of individuals including: Martin Luther King, Mary Seacole, Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela.

The main purpose has been to develop an understanding as to how individuals and groups have striven to overcome inequality and create fairness for all. It's important not to forget the determination shown by so many people, not just those listed, in making this world a fairer place for everyone.

Blue Class, as part of their World War II topic, also looked at the role of the Tuskegee Airmen and their bid to be treated equally as pilots rather than just undertaking routine labouring jobs in the USAAF.

New School Council Elected

On Wednesday 20th October, class elections were held for school council representatives from Reception to Year 5. This was followed by a whole-school vote on Thursday for the year six council chairman. This was a close-run election, and the winner came top by fourteen votes to thirteen.

I take great pleasure in announcing the new school council for the 2010-11 year.

Is Winter Here Already?

Most people started the morning by scraping the ice off their car windscreens and wrapping up in a range of coats, gloves, hats and scarves.

Well, it was no exception at Earl Soham this morning where an icy top playground met the children. Some children took great delight in lifting the sheets of ice off the cold frames in the garden area...and then finding out how many pieces they shattered into when dropped!

It goes to show how quickly the weather can change, so please make sure that everyone has got their coats, gloves, hats, etc in school every day.

Eco Council Water Assembly

Yesterday morning the Eco-Council gave their first assembly on the topic of saving water. Each of the council read out some facts about water, explaining how the water cycle works, and how water is treated. Children were invited to think about their own water use at home and to take part ion a water-cycle colouring competition.

Mr Mansell finished off the assembly by leading the children in singing 'Hair, shoulders, knees and toes' which went like this:

Hair, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes.

Hair, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes.

And face and neck and under the armpits,

Don't forget the other bits, other bits!

This was repeated, with one or more words omitted each time, to last four minutes - the recommended length of time for a shower.

A big thanks to Mrs Exton for her hard work in preparing the Eco-Council for their assembly, and to all the children who took part for giving up their time for the good of the school.

Candidates for School Council Chairman

In this morning's assembly, eight year six pupils stood in front of the school and read their letter of application for the post of School Council chairman.
Each had good ideas and plans for their term of office and the rest of the school will be faced with a difficult decision when they cast their votes on Thursday morning.

I would like to congratulate each of the candidates on their excellent letters of application, which will be displayed on the School Council notice board.
