Black History Month

During the past few weeks, assemblies have focused on celebrating Black History Month. We have looked at the stories of individuals including: Martin Luther King, Mary Seacole, Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela.

The main purpose has been to develop an understanding as to how individuals and groups have striven to overcome inequality and create fairness for all. It's important not to forget the determination shown by so many people, not just those listed, in making this world a fairer place for everyone.

Blue Class, as part of their World War II topic, also looked at the role of the Tuskegee Airmen and their bid to be treated equally as pilots rather than just undertaking routine labouring jobs in the USAAF.

New School Council Elected

On Wednesday 20th October, class elections were held for school council representatives from Reception to Year 5. This was followed by a whole-school vote on Thursday for the year six council chairman. This was a close-run election, and the winner came top by fourteen votes to thirteen.

I take great pleasure in announcing the new school council for the 2010-11 year.

Is Winter Here Already?

Most people started the morning by scraping the ice off their car windscreens and wrapping up in a range of coats, gloves, hats and scarves.

Well, it was no exception at Earl Soham this morning where an icy top playground met the children. Some children took great delight in lifting the sheets of ice off the cold frames in the garden area...and then finding out how many pieces they shattered into when dropped!

It goes to show how quickly the weather can change, so please make sure that everyone has got their coats, gloves, hats, etc in school every day.

Eco Council Water Assembly

Yesterday morning the Eco-Council gave their first assembly on the topic of saving water. Each of the council read out some facts about water, explaining how the water cycle works, and how water is treated. Children were invited to think about their own water use at home and to take part ion a water-cycle colouring competition.

Mr Mansell finished off the assembly by leading the children in singing 'Hair, shoulders, knees and toes' which went like this:

Hair, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes.

Hair, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes.

And face and neck and under the armpits,

Don't forget the other bits, other bits!

This was repeated, with one or more words omitted each time, to last four minutes - the recommended length of time for a shower.

A big thanks to Mrs Exton for her hard work in preparing the Eco-Council for their assembly, and to all the children who took part for giving up their time for the good of the school.

Candidates for School Council Chairman

In this morning's assembly, eight year six pupils stood in front of the school and read their letter of application for the post of School Council chairman.
Each had good ideas and plans for their term of office and the rest of the school will be faced with a difficult decision when they cast their votes on Thursday morning.

I would like to congratulate each of the candidates on their excellent letters of application, which will be displayed on the School Council notice board.

Whole School Cinema Trip

Seventy two children and a number of excited adults attended a screening of Toy Story 3 at Cineworld, Bury St. Edmunds. This was part of Film Education's schools' week, which offered free screenings to school children around the country. We were also fortunate that the PTFA funded the transport costs for everyone.
We arrived at the cinema with time to spare and settled down to what was almost a private viewing for us!
The adventures of Woody, Buzz, Jessie and co. continued with Andy (their owner) leaving home to go to college. What would happen to the toys? The highs and lows of this marvellous film were eagerly followed by all the children throughout.
The children were superbly behaved and had a great time and returned back to school in time for hot dogs and chips.

Small Schools' Football Tournament

Earl Soham made the journey to Stradbroke for the annual small schools' 6-a-side Football Tournament. The boys did themselves proud with sterling performances which saw them defeat Wilby 'B' 2 - 0, Worlingworth 2 - 0 and Thorndon 4 - 0. Their only defeat in qualifying came at the hands of Wetheringsett, 1 - 0.
Therefore, Earl Soham qualified for the semi-finals against Group B winners, Wilby 'A'. Playing against a school with a fantastic footballing tradition, Earl Soham put in their performance of the tournament, narrowly going down 1 - 0 in a scintillating match.
Boys, all of us who were there were so proud of you. You've come a long way over a short period of time - keep working hard at training!

European Language Day 2010

Guest Post by William (Year 4)

On the 28th of September we had European language day and we learnt some Spanish, German and Italian.In assembly on the board we had some flags and we had to try and get the names all right in the end. Mr Pearce told us most of them but a few he didn’t know. In German we learnt our numbers up to ten; we also learnt a song about the months of the year and we sung it in assembly. 


At two o clock, Red class showed  some french flags that they had made and learnt how to say the colours that they used. 


At quarter to eleven in Italian we learnt our numbers up to ten as well. Afterwards we played a game while learning some of our colours. 


After lunch we got taught some Spanish. Mr Mansell was teaching us; we did it on the BBC website and we learnt how to say quite a lot of words. At the end we played a couple of games. 


My favourite bit probably was German because I didn't know any and I really wanted to learn some and my brothers know some and I wanted to as well.

European Day of Languages

Today we had our European Day of Languages; it was very exiting. In the morning we had a lesson of German we all had a really 

good time. 

Then we had a continental breakfast with carrots, croissants and pain-au-chocolat [which is a chocolate croissant].

Then we had an Italian 

lesson. In our Italian lesson we learnt the colours such as blue, red, yellow and green. It really was a brilliant day!

Harvest Lunch

Over 70 people took part in our 'Harvest Lunch' yesterday, including over 30 parents and grandparents. After a hearty lunch of Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding with all the trimmings (followed by Syrup Sponge and Custard) many of our guests joined the children on the playground, setting up a variety of games and activities. The children had a great time and it looked like all our guests did too!
